eXtended Reality

Extended reality (XR) is a term that includes all the technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), letting “X” be an arbitrary variable that can interpolate between these various realities or eXtrapolate (eXtend) beyond them. The technology is intended to combine or mirror the physical world with a “digital twin world” able to interact with it.

These technologies differentiate one from another depending on the level of immersivity. According to Paul Milgram’s paper of 1994, we can define a taxonomy of the various ways in which “virtual” and “real” aspects of MR environments can be arranged.

Various commercial devices (like HoloLoens, MagicLeap, Oculus, etc.) recreate XR with different levels of immersivity and provide a simulation of virtual objects the user can interact with. Interaction can occur via gestures, controllers or voice commands.
